The Flaming Critic Reviews: Summer Reads I have spent the last few months scouring the land for Fun in the Sun books to read. After a long search I found the Books of Summer. Here is a short list. Look for more in the future. Dead As A
Doornail This is the latest Southern Vampire Novel featuring Sookie Stackhouse and her supernatural friends. Sookie’s brother Jason is turning into a werepanther. He goes to stay with a group of shape shifters for his first exciting transformation. Soon afterward shape shifters begin to be killed. Jason is a suspect in the were community as he has just turned and they are not sure he truly has embraced the change. In the meantime, Sookie realizes her life is in danger and Eric, the King of the Louisiana Vampires sends a new bartender to Merlotte’s who is to double as Sookie’s body guard. Not only does Sookie have to be careful not to get herself killed she also has to find out who is killing the shape shifters. Once again Harris weaves a wonderful magic tale of a supernatural world inhabited by zany characters. All of Harris’ Southern Vampire Novels are fun reads. Look for Dead Until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas, Club Dead, and Dead To The World. You will have the time of your life.

Bloodlines This is the fifth book in the Blood Series by Huff. Vicki Nelson is a PI who partners with a 450 year old Vampire to solve supernatural mysteries. Her ex partner Mike Celluci adds an interesting romantic mix. In Bloodlines a Mummy is on the loose and wants to rule Ontario by taking as many souls as possible for his god and controlling those in power. It is up to Vicki, Henry and Mike to stop him. The Mummy has targeted Vicki as a soul sacrifice to his God. Can Vicki be saved? Can the Mummy be stopped? Will Henry and Mike finally come to an agreement over who will court Vicki? It is another exciting Huff book with a dash of romance thrown in.
Summon the
Keeper Can you tell I like Tanya Huff? Summon the Keeper is another great book by Huff. Claire Hansen is a member of an elite group that keeps the Universe in balance. She goes where she is summoned. Claire is summoned to rundown Guesthouse run by a gnome. The gnome leaves as soon as she arrives and Claire has no choice but to take over the business. She soon finds a keeper, who has been asleep for 50 years in one of the rooms and the entrance to Hell in the basement. The sleeping keeper is surrounded by protective magic. Hell who lives in the basement will talk to anyone who will listen including itself. Her job is to close Hell, keep the old Keeper Asleep and find something to do with her as well in order to keep the universe in balance. Claire fears the only way to protect the universal balance is to live in the rundown Guesthouse for the rest of her life. She would never be able to leave for fear hell will get loose. She is not alone in this. Austin her cat talks, there is a much grounded handyman and a ghost that has been there at least a hundred years. All four work to find a solution so the universe will not tip out of balance. Summon The Keeper is a page turner. You never are sure what will happen next. Leave it to Huff to entice and entertain.
Rosebud, The Magazine for People Who Enjoy Good Writing. The magazine is full of short stories and poetry by established and new authors. Rosebud also sponsors writing contests throughout the year. If you subscribe you get a set of 12 embossed note cards. If you subscribe to six issues you will get The Best of Rosebud Anthology. This is one of the best literary magazines on the market today. I pick my copies up at the local Barnes and Noble store. Rosebud will keep you entertained for hours. Who knows? You may want to enter one of their contests or submit a story or poem. Another magazine I enjoy is Sedona, Journal of Emergence. Sedona’s pages are full of interesting channeled information. There are at least twenty channelers each issue. One channels the Archangel Michael, one Lummerian and Atlantians, another Mother Earth, and more from the galaxy. You can also find Astrology for the month, Tarot readings, and Dream Interpretations. You know channelers like this tend to be a dime a dozen. Make sure you read the classifieds in the back for rousing entertainment. I do not agree with all I read in Sedona but I find the magazine highly entertaining and very interesting. I also find a lot of story ideas. Whether you want entertaining reading, story ideas, or just to keep up with channelers Sedona is sure to please. All the featured
books and magazines earn a FIVE bonfire rating! That’s all for now. Off to find some new books to read, a very tall glass of ice tea with lemon, lots of ice please, and my lounger. Scouring the earth is hard work. Dragon Lady.
